taken from a written and photographic assignment I undertook for Belarus Free Theatre 2020. These bios were concocted from interviews in Minsk and are inspired by the work of Svetlana Alexievich. The process was time-consuming and difficult as I don't speak Russian or Belarusian and worked from recorded ad hoc translations which were re-written 100s of times to try and find the flow of the original version in English. Thanks to David Lan who gave me the best advice ever: when working in translation, try and make it sound like the person doesn't know when they are coming to the end of their sentence.
